The Remix: As You Like It, Reimagined
Ten years ago, we had an idea inspired by the play we were working on. It was an all-female As You Like It for Sacramento Shakespeare Festival. We’d never done anything like it before, and paired up with the all-male Romeo & Juliet, it was shaping up to be amazing.
We had the opportunity to be interviewed by Girls on the Grid as a result of this approach. I overheard some of the conversations, and the most common comment was “I could audition for everything. Everything! I’ve never had that opportunity before.”
I was sitting with my stage manager, Josh Anderson, and an idea struck us almost at the same time. You see, we’d heard about a handful of all-female Shakespeare companies, but they were few and far between. We started the research…
- Manhattan Shakespeare Project
- Smooth Faced Gentleman
- Women’s Will
- Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company
This was June 2015. These were the four we could find, and at that time, only LAWSC and Smooth Faced Gentlemen were producing. We took up the charge. In September 2015, we produced four performances of Henry V for free in Fremont Park.
The pandemic took us on hiatus, and it’s been a challenge to get back to producing. Thanks to the inspiration from our friends at Shakespeare on the Vine, we have done it!
Join us Sept. 6 & 7 at 5:30 pm in Fremont Park for our production of As You Like it, original practices style.
Bring your chairs or blankets, a fan or light jacket (depending on the weather), and a picnic (no alcohol is allowed in city parks), and spend a little time with this lovely pastoral tale of love and laughter.
Consider RSVP’ing on our Facebook event. It is not required, but helpful.
We’ll see you at the park!
